Postiz self-hosted: The real cost of doing it yourself

Self-hosting Postiz is free in software. But the total cost includes your server, setup time, backups, security patches, and the ops burden. We break down every option.

Three ways to run Postiz

When you search for 'Postiz self-hosted,' you're really asking: how much will this cost me?

There are three paths:

1. Self-hosted DIY (free software, but not zero-cost) You own the server, run the Docker containers, manage the database, handle backups. Costs: 4-8 hours to set up, roughly 1 hour per month to maintain. Infrastructure: $4-0/month (Hetzner CX22 or Oracle Cloud free tier).

2. Postiz Cloud (official SaaS, US-hosted) Postiz's own cloud product. Standard plan is $29/month for 5 channels. Unlimited team members on Team+ tiers. No setup or maintenance. Data lives in US datacenters—relevant if GDPR compliance matters to you.

3. Opsily managed Postiz (EU-hosted, fully managed) Same Postiz software, hosted and maintained by us. Automatic backups, SSL, updates, monitoring. GDPR-compliant EU data centers. One flat monthly fee covers everything.

4-8 hrs

Most people underestimate the cost of 'free'

Self-hosting Postiz saves money on software licensing. It does not save money on your time, server reliability, or data safety.

The infrastructure reality

What it takes to self-host Postiz

Postiz is not a single Docker image. It requires six to nine containers:

  • Next.js (frontend)
  • NestJS (backend API)
  • PostgreSQL (database)
  • Redis (caching)
  • Temporal (workflow orchestration with Elasticsearch and dedicated PostgreSQL)

Minimum specs: 2GB RAM (4GB preferred). Hetzner Cloud CX22 costs about 4 euros per month. Oracle Cloud free tier gives you 24GB RAM if you qualify.

You need to:

  1. Provision a Linux VPS
  2. Install Docker and Docker Compose
  3. Clone the Postiz repository or use docker-compose.yml
  4. Configure environment variables (database credentials, API keys, social platform credentials)
  5. Set up a reverse proxy (Nginx or Caddy) for SSL/TLS
  6. Optionally add Cloudflare Tunnel for external access without exposing your server IP
  7. Set up automated backups (PostgreSQL dump + offsite storage)
  8. Configure monitoring and alerting (so you know when Postiz crashes at 2am)
  9. Plan for updates and security patches (Postiz is actively maintained; you need to pull new images regularly)

The pratikpathak.com self-hosting guide confirms this: initial setup is a 'massive wall' of multi-container orchestration. Most non-engineers read it and decide it is not worth their time.

GDPR note: If you self-host on a Hetzner VPS in Germany or Finland, your data stays in the EU. That's the main reason some teams choose DIY—regulatory compliance or philosophical control.

Why Opsily managed Postiz wins

Stop managing infrastructure. Start scheduling posts.

Zero setup burden

We handle Docker, Temporal, PostgreSQL, Redis, SSL, reverse proxy, and firewall configuration. You log in and start scheduling posts. No command line. No environment variables to debug.

Automatic operations

Backups run every night (encrypted, offsite). Updates deploy automatically. Monitoring alerts us if anything breaks. You never wake up to a crashed Postiz instance.

GDPR by default

Your Postiz instance runs in EU datacenters with AES-256 encryption at rest and TLS in transit. We provide a Data Processing Agreement. Postiz Cloud is US-based; we are not.

Common questions about Postiz hosting

Hetzner Cloud CX22 or CAX21 (ARM) costs about 4 euros per month. Oracle Cloud free tier is technically free if you qualify (24GB RAM, 4 vCPUs). Both require Docker Compose to deploy Postiz. However, cheapest does not mean best: you still need to manage backups, security patches, SSL certificates, and monitoring yourself. Most people find that 4-8 hours of setup plus 1 hour per month of maintenance makes the 'free' option more expensive than it looks.
