Self-Host Odoo: What Actually Matters

What Self-Hosting Looks Like, Month 2 Onward

Setup is the easy part. Maintenance is what kills self-hosted deployments.

Every month, you will:

• Security patches: Odoo releases 2-3 patch versions per month. You apply them; they require database backups + brief downtime. 1-2 hours/month.
• Log rotation: Odoo logs fill disks fast. You configure logrotate to archive old logs daily. If you miss this, your server fills up and crashes at 3am. 30 minutes, once, then forgotten until it breaks.
• Database backups: PostgreSQL needs daily backups. Set up automated dumps to S3 or another server. Verify they actually work (never learn the backup broke when you need it). 1 hour setup, 15 min/month to verify.
• SSL certificate renewal: Let's Encrypt certs expire every 90 days. If you're manual, you renew 4 times a year. If you automate it (via certbot), you still monitor that automation works. 10 min/month checking logs.
• Performance monitoring: Your database grows. Query performance degrades. You add indexes, tune PostgreSQL config. Or just let it get slow. 2-3 hours/month if you're proactive.
• DNS & email: Odoo sends transactional emails (order confirmations, password resets). You configure mail relays (SendGrid, Mailgun) and monitor bounce rates. 1-2 hours/month.

Total: 5-10 hours per month, minimum.

If your time is worth $50/hr, that's $250-500/month of labor just to keep the lights on. Add it to your $10-30 server cost, and you're at $280-530/month before you've written a single module.

When Things Break

Your biggest costs come when something goes wrong:

• Database corruption: A crashed Postgres process leaves the database in an inconsistent state. Recovery takes 4-8 hours and may lose recent data if backups weren't incremental. Your team is stuck using spreadsheets meanwhile.
• Out of disk space at 3am: Logs filled the disk, Odoo crashed, no one noticed until morning. You emergency-resize the disk, restore from backup, replay transactions. 2-4 hours of firefighting.
• SSL certificate expired: You forget renewal cron, cert expires, browsers block your app. Your customers see a connection not private warning. Even if it only lasts 2 hours before you notice, it's 2 hours of lost sales and support tickets.
• PostgreSQL version incompatibility: You update the OS, PostgreSQL jumps versions, Odoo breaks. You spend 6 hours rolling back or rebuilding the database.

These events are rare if you're disciplined. But they cost 10-20 hours when they hit. Over a year, even one incident eats the entire labor budget.

The Real Math

Self-hosted Odoo Community (free):

• Server: $120-360/year
• Labor (5-10 hrs/month x 12 months x $50/hr): $3,000-6,000/year
• Total Year 1: $3,120-6,360

Managed Odoo hosting (Opsily):

• Includes server, backups, SSL, monitoring, patches: $200-800/month depending on size
• Total Year 1: $2,400-9,600

For a 5-person team using Odoo, managed hosting is actually cheaper than DIY + your lost hours.

For a 20-person team, or if you have a DevOps engineer on staff, self-hosting can be economical.

For a 5-person team with no Linux experience, self-hosting is a money loser.
