Nextcloud vs ownCloud vs Seafile: Which Self-Hosted Platform Is Right for You?
Three production-grade open-source solutions. Three different strategies for file sync, sharing, and collaboration. Compare features, pricing, governance, and lock-in to make the right choice for your team before you commit to self-hosting.
Choose Based on Your Priorities
Nextcloud, ownCloud, and Seafile all handle file sync and share. But they solve different problems.
Use case first: Do you need a complete collaboration platform (Nextcloud), a stable enterprise file vault (ownCloud), or the fastest possible sync for large files (Seafile)? If your team is replacing Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, Nextcloud is the only contender. If you are strictly syncing files and need it fast, Seafile wins. ownCloud appeals to enterprises that already run it and fear the migration cost.
Team size and budget: Seafile starts at $48/user/year for 10-249 users. Nextcloud Standard is €71.29/user/year (minimum 100 users). ownCloud Enterprise runs approximately €83/user/year (minimum 25 users). For a team of 100, Seafile costs $4,800/year. Nextcloud costs €7,129/year. ownCloud costs roughly €8,300/year. Seafile is 3-4x cheaper.
Infrastructure overhead: Nextcloud is the hungriest: 4-8+ vCPU and 8-32GB RAM for moderate teams. ownCloud needs 2-4 vCPU and 8GB RAM. Seafile is lean: 1 vCPU and 1GB RAM gets you running. If you are self-hosting on limited hardware or edge devices, Seafile is built for you.
Data sovereignty and governance: Nextcloud is German-owned, open-source (AGPLv3), and has no US parent company. It is the safest choice for GDPR-critical organizations. ownCloud was acquired by US-based Kiteworks in late 2024, which shifts governance to a US entity subject to US law. For strict data residency requirements, this is now a red flag. Seafile is split between Germany and China, which complicates jurisdiction matters.
Exit cost: Nextcloud and ownCloud store files as standard filesystem files. You can export them via WebDAV, sync them with rclone, or move them to any other platform. Seafile uses proprietary block-level storage. Migration off Seafile requires using the Seafile client or API to export your data. This asymmetry means switching costs are meaningful.
Long-term stability: Nextcloud is the most active (36.8K GitHub stars, 90.6K+ commits), with a sustainable business model. ownCloud is respectable (8.8K stars, 50.7K+ commits) but momentum is uncertain post-Kiteworks. Seafile is stable but niche (546 stars, 961 commits). For multi-year deployments, community health and active development matter.
Platform Feature Matrix
| Feature | Nextcloud | ownCloud | Seafile |
|---|---|---|---|
| File sync and share | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| WebDAV | Yes | Yes | Limited |
| Versioning | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| End-to-end encryption | Yes (optional) | Yes (optional) | Yes |
| Video conferencing | Yes (Talk) | No | No |
| Chat | Yes | No | No |
| Office editing | Yes (Office, Collabora) | Integration only | Integration only |
| Calendar/Contacts | Yes (full Groupware) | Yes (limited) | No |
| Project management | Yes (Deck) | No | No |
| Mobile app | iOS/Android | iOS/Android | iOS/Android |
| Desktop client | Windows/Mac/Linux | Windows/Mac/Linux | Windows/Mac/Linux |
| LDAP/AD auth | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| SSO (SAML/OAuth) | Yes | Yes | Yes (ADFS) |
| Community apps | 400+ | Limited | Minimal |
| Audit logging | Basic/Enterprise | Enterprise | Advanced |
The key trade-off: Nextcloud includes calendar, office editing, video, and chat natively. ownCloud strips these back but offers multi-tenancy and enterprise controls. Seafile focuses exclusively on file sync and does it faster than both.
What You Will Actually Pay
Nextcloud Enterprise: €71.29/user/year (Standard, minimum 100 users), €104.99/user/year (Premium), €204.75/user/year (Ultimate). For 100 users: €7,129–€20,475 per year depending on tier. Nextcloud One managed service: €42–€31.50/user/year (100–250+ users) hosted in Germany with 24/7 support.
ownCloud Enterprise: Community edition free (self-managed). Enterprise Standard approximately €83/user/year (minimum 25 users). ownCloud.online SaaS: €1.85–€5/user/month. For 100 users: €8,300 per year (self-hosted) or €2,220–€6,000 per year (SaaS).
Seafile Pro Edition: Free up to 3 users. 10–249 users: $48/user/year. 250–499: $44/user/year. 500–749: $40/user/year. 750–999: $35/user/year. For 100 users: $4,800 per year.
Per-user cost at scale:
- Seafile (100 users): $48/year
- Nextcloud Standard (100 users): €71.29/year
- Nextcloud Premium (100 users): €104.99/year
- ownCloud Enterprise (100 users): €83/year
Seafile wins on pure licensing cost. Nextcloud offers the broadest feature set and thus replaces the most SaaS tools (video, chat, office, calendar). ownCloud is the middle ground but now carries governance risk post-acquisition.
The ownCloud acquisition changed everything
In late 2024, ownCloud was acquired by US-based Kiteworks. If your organization requires strict data sovereignty or GDPR compliance with zero US entity involvement, this matters. Nextcloud (German, AGPLv3, no US parent) is now the only clear choice. ownCloud.online SaaS is still hosted in Germany, but the company backing it is now US-based. For regulated industries, evaluate the risk carefully.
How Hard Is It to Switch?
This is the overlooked question. You choose a platform expecting to run it for 3-5 years. What happens if you need to move?
Nextcloud and ownCloud: Both store files as plain filesystem files. You can export via WebDAV, use rclone to sync to another system, or directly copy files from the filesystem. Migrating to any other platform is straightforward.
Seafile: Uses block-level deduplication storage. Your files are stored in an opaque block format, not as individual files. To migrate, you must export through the Seafile client (which reconstructs files from blocks) or use Seafile API. Direct filesystem access does not work.
Why this matters: Seafile architecture is a feature (faster sync, lower storage overhead). It is also a lock-in mechanism. The company is not trying to trap you, it is just a side effect of the design. But over 5 years, the switching cost compounds. If you are a team of 50 with 2TB of data, migrating out of Seafile takes days. Migrating out of Nextcloud takes hours. Evaluate this carefully if you value optionality.
Which Platform Will Still Be Around in 5 Years?
Nextcloud: 36.8K GitHub stars. 90.6K+ commits. Thousands of contributors. New releases every 3 months. The platform is mature, actively developed, and backed by a profitable company (Nextcloud GmbH). The open-source community is thriving.
ownCloud: 8.8K stars. 50.7K+ commits. Respectable but declining relative to Nextcloud. The Kiteworks acquisition in late 2024 introduces uncertainty. Will Kiteworks invest in the product or let it stagnate? It is unclear. The open-source community remains active, but commercial momentum is murky.
Seafile: 546 stars. 961 commits. Niche but stable. Haiwen Ltd (Germany and China) maintains it, and it is still actively developed. But the smaller ecosystem means fewer third-party integrations and slower feature expansion. Unlikely to vanish, but do not expect rapid innovation.
For risk: If long-term stability and feature velocity matter, Nextcloud is the safest. Seafile is stable but slower. ownCloud is a question mark post-acquisition.
