The Basics

What's the Difference Between Hub 9 and Hub 10?

Hub 9 (Nextcloud 30) shipped September 14, 2024. Hub 10 (Nextcloud 31) shipped February 25, 2025. These are version names, not different products.

Both are free and open-source under AGPL v3.0. Both run on your own servers. Neither has version-specific licensing — if you use Nextcloud Enterprise, the subscription cost is the same whether you're on Hub 9 or Hub 10.

So the question isn't "which should I buy?" It's "do I need to upgrade my existing Hub 9 instance? And if yes, what's the effort?"

Hub 9 focused on automation and visual collaboration. Hub 10 focused on performance and scalability. They're different priorities, not one being strictly "better."

Upgrade Decision

When Should You Upgrade from Hub 9 to Hub 10?

You need the upgrade if:

  • Your team is growing past 50–100 users and you're seeing file-upload delays. Hub 10's 6x faster uploads (10GB in 45 seconds instead of 195 seconds) is real.
  • You run a heavily encrypted instance and users complain about needing the desktop client to access files. E2EE in browser removes that friction.
  • Your database is becoming a bottleneck. Hub 10's unlimited read replicas let you scale horizontally without rewriting your entire schema.

You can stay on Hub 9 if:

  • Your team is under 30 people and upload speed is fine.
  • You rely heavily on Whiteboard and Flow (both shipped in Hub 9; no new features in Hub 10 here).
  • You're running a single-instance setup and have no plans to cluster.

Neither choice is wrong. Hub 9 is stable and mature. Hub 10 is newer, faster, and built for scale.

The Hidden Cost

The Real Upgrade Cost: What Self-Hosted Operators Face

You won't pay Nextcloud anything extra to upgrade. But you will pay in time.

Downtime — Your instance goes offline during the upgrade. Even with maintenance mode and pre-staging, a 50-user Nextcloud instance takes 30 minutes to 2 hours to migrate.

Compatibility checks — You need to verify that every installed app and plugin works with Hub 10. Some don't. You'll need to disable, update, or replace them.

Database migrations — If you're upgrading Nextcloud's database schema (and you almost always do), there's risk of failed migrations on large datasets. Rollback is possible but messy.

Backup complexity — You need a bulletproof backup before you touch anything. A corrupted backup during an upgrade turns a 2-hour outage into a data-loss incident.

Ongoing ops — Hub 10 has new settings, new database tables, new API endpoints. Your monitoring, automation, and runbooks need updating.

For a small team running Nextcloud on a VPS, this is doable. For an organization with 200+ users, compliance requirements, and SLA commitments, the operational lift is significant.

How Opsily Manages Hub 9 to Hub 10 Upgrades

We take the complexity out of Nextcloud upgrades. Here's what happens under the hood.

1
Staging & Testing

We clone your entire production instance to an isolated environment and test the Hub 10 upgrade there. All apps, plugins, and custom configs get validated before we touch your live server.

2
Zero-Downtime Migration

Using database replication and load balancer failover, we migrate your data and run schema upgrades on a replica while your instance stays live. No maintenance windows needed.

3
Rollback Ready

Until you confirm everything works, your original Hub 9 instance remains active and revertible. One command takes you back if anything breaks.
