Metabase vs. Power BI: Which BI tool costs less and delivers faster?

Metabase and Power BI serve the same goal—turning data into dashboards your team can act on. But they take different roads: one is lightweight and SQL-first, the other is enterprise-grade and requires DAX. Here's how they stack up on price, features, and deployment.

The cost difference

Why Metabase usually wins on price

Power BI charges per person. A team of 20 at $14 per user per month costs $2,800 per month just for base Pro licenses. Add Fabric capacity (required for Copilot) at $5,250 per month, and you're at $8,050 per month.

Metabase's Pro plan costs $575 per month for up to 10 users, plus $12 per additional user. That same team of 20 costs $695 per month. Ten times less.

But here's the catch: Metabase's advantage shrinks if your team is very small (under 5 people) or if you need Purview-level governance. Power BI's per-user model actually works for teams that are 2-3 people and don't touch enterprise compliance.

The self-hosting wildcard

Metabase's free, open-source Community Edition has no user limits. Download it, run it on a server you own, and your entire organization uses it for nothing, except your ops team's time keeping it running and backed up.

Power BI doesn't have that option. You either subscribe to the cloud service or buy on-premises licenses (which are expensive and complex).

If your team has even one person comfortable with Docker and Linux, Metabase's free edition is unbeatable. If operations is a headache you'd rather outsource, managed Metabase hosting through Opsily is $100-$575 per month depending on your tier.

AI and natural language

AI is table stakes. Metabase includes it. Power BI charges extra.

Both tools now let non-technical users ask questions in English and get charts back. Metabase calls it Metabot. Power BI calls it Copilot.

Metabot is in every Metabase plan at no extra cost. You bring your own LLM or use Metabase's AI service ($3.75 per million tokens, usually negligible).

Copilot is a Power BI Fabric feature. Fabric capacity starts at $5,250 per month for the F64 SKU. That's not per user. That's a monthly bill to unlock one feature.

For most teams, Metabase's AI inclusion tips the scale in its favor. If you need Microsoft's Copilot Studio ecosystem integration, you're locked into Fabric anyway.

SQL vs. DAX

Power BI requires DAX. Metabase makes it optional.

Power BI's data modeling language is DAX (Data Analysis Expressions). It's powerful, but steep. Your analyst team spends months learning syntax. Metabase lets you write SQL queries directly or use a visual query builder.

If your team is already SQL-fluent (engineering teams, data teams), Metabase feels native. If your team is Excel-fluent (business analysts), Power BI's drag-and-drop model might actually be faster. The gap narrows if your team has never coded at all, both require training.

One more thing: Metabase's visual builder doesn't require understanding databases. Power BI assumes you understand data modeling concepts. That matters if you're hiring non-technical dashboarders.

Questions about Metabase and managed hosting

Power BI dashboards can't be automatically converted. They're built in DAX and Power BI's data model. But your underlying data is portable. Connect Metabase to the same databases Power BI was querying. Rebuild your core dashboards in Metabase (usually faster than expected because Metabase's UI is more intuitive). For most teams, core dashboards take a few days to rebuild. You don't lose any data; you just rebuild the dashboards. Metabase's embedded analytics SDK makes it easy to publish them wherever your team works.

Stop choosing between cost and capability.

Metabase delivers both. Start your free trial on Opsily, no credit card, no setup fees.
