Built for teams who need reliability
What is a Metabase Dashboard?
A dashboard is a collection of linked queries and visualizations that answer a specific business question. Unlike a single chart, dashboards show multiple metrics, trends, and drill-down opportunities on one page.
Metabase dashboards are interactive. Click a filter to update all charts. Click a data point to drill deeper. Share with your team via email, Slack, or public links. Schedule auto-refresh or email subscriptions. Embed in your product if you want white-label analytics.
The magic is that Metabase requires no SQL for most tasks. If you can click, you can build.
Create a Dashboard in 5 Steps
Here's how to create a Metabase dashboard in 5 steps.
Choose Your App
Select an app to get started.
Connect Your Data
Go to Admin > Databases. Add PostgreSQL, MySQL, BigQuery, Snowflake, or any of 20+ supported sources. Metabase reads your schema automatically.
Create Questions
Click New > Question. Choose your data source. Use the visual query builder to filter, group, and sort. No SQL required. Preview your data as you build.
Save and Visualize
Name your question. Choose a chart type (table, bar, line, pie, map, gauge, etc.). Save to a collection. Metabase remembers this for reuse.
Create the Dashboard
Click New > Dashboard. Drag saved questions onto the canvas. Resize cards. Add filters that link multiple questions together. Metabase updates all charts when you change a filter.
Publish and Share
Save the dashboard. Share with your team via public link, email subscription, or Slack. Set auto-refresh. Metabase dashboards are live, they pull fresh data every time someone opens them.
5 Mistakes to Avoid
Too many metrics on one dashboard. Dashboards should answer one question, not 50. If you're adding more than 8 charts, split into two dashboards.
Filters that confuse users. Name filters clearly ("Region" not "R"). Set sensible defaults so the dashboard is useful on first load.
Slow queries. Metabase will warn you if a chart takes >10 seconds. Optimize your database indexes or pre-aggregate data in a warehouse table. Opsily's Metabase hosting doesn't make slow queries fast, but it does give you a stable platform to iterate.
No data documentation. Add a description to your dashboard explaining what it measures and why it matters. Your future self (and your teammates) will thank you.
Forgetting about permissions. If you're publishing revenue dashboards, restrict who can see them. Use row-level permissions if teams should see only their own data.
Unlimited dashboards. Unlimited queries. One flat price.
Metabase charges per user, not per dashboard. Whether you create 1 dashboard or 100, the cost stays the same. Superset as many questions as you need.
Questions About Dashboard Creation
Click 'New' in the top navigation and select 'Dashboard'. Name it, then drag saved questions (charts) onto the canvas. Resize them to fit. Add filters by clicking the filter icon, filters can be connected to specific dashboard cards so changing a filter updates all related charts. Save when done. Your dashboard is now live and can be shared with your team.
