Hermes Agent vs OpenCode: Which AI Tool Do You Need?

These are not competitors. They solve different problems. Hermes Agent runs 24/7 as your always-on agent. OpenCode specializes in terminal-based coding. Most teams use both. Here is what each one does, and how they work together.

What They Do

Hermes Agent: The Always-On Orchestrator

Hermes Agent is an MIT-licensed AI agent by Nous Research that runs as a permanent server daemon. It maintains persistent memory across sessions, automatically creates and improves skills from experience, and schedules jobs with cron. It connects to 15+ messaging platforms: Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, Email, and more.

Use Hermes for: daily task automation, personal assistant behavior, research agents with memory, scheduled reporting, job orchestration, and always-on access via any messaging app.

OpenCode: The Coding Specialist

OpenCode is a terminal UI (TUI) tool for developers who need a dedicated coding agent. It reads, writes, and edits code in project folders. It supports 75+ LLM providers: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, AWS, Groq, Azure, GitHub Copilot, and many others. Conversation history is stored in SQLite.

Use OpenCode for: terminal-based code generation and editing, free model experimentation, developers who live in the command line, and specialized coding tasks within a project.

Important note: OpenCode was archived in September 2025 and migrated to a successor project called "Crush." The OpenCode CLI is still functional, but the project is no longer actively maintained by the original team.

How They Work Together

Not Either/Or. Both.

These tools are complementary, not competitive. The most effective setup uses them together:

Hermes as the brain. Hermes Agent runs all day. It handles your calendar, monitors systems, triggers jobs, and manages messaging. When a task requires coding or refactoring, it delegates to OpenCode.

OpenCode as the builder. When Hermes encounters code-related work, it invokes OpenCode as a built-in skill. OpenCode focuses on reading, writing, and editing code with deep provider support. Once the code is complete, Hermes continues orchestrating.

Example workflow: Hermes detects a GitHub issue that needs fixing. It spawns an OpenCode session to analyze the repo and write a patch. OpenCode returns the result. Hermes submits the PR and logs the action to memory.

Which to Choose If You Can Only Pick One

If you build user-facing automation or need always-on behavior: start with Hermes Agent. It handles more jobs and runs continuously.

If you are a developer who codes in the terminal and wants maximum provider choice: start with OpenCode. It is free to install and works offline.

For production deployments requiring 24/7 availability, reliability, and EU data residency: run Hermes on Opsily, then add OpenCode as a skill when you need it.

Hermes Agent is actively maintained. OpenCode is not.

Hermes Agent receives regular updates from Nous Research. OpenCode was archived in September 2025 and moved to a new project. For stability and long-term support, Hermes is the clear choice.
