How it works

Headless Ghost: Full control over your frontend

When Ghost is used as a headless CMS, you get the best of both worlds:

  1. Ghost handles content — Rich editor, media management, publishing workflows, analytics. Editors never see code.
  2. You build the frontend — Next.js, Gatsby, Eleventy, Nuxt, VuePress, Hugo, Gridsome. Any framework works.
  3. Static HTML output — Pre-render every page at build time. Deploy to Vercel, Netlify, or CDN. No server needed.

One important limit

Headless Ghost cannot use memberships, subscriptions, or paid content features. These require Ghost's frontend layer to work. If you need paywalls, implement them in your custom frontend or pair Ghost with a payment processor.

Everything else works: tag archives, author pages, SEO metadata, sitemaps, pagination, comments—you just code it yourself using Ghost's API data.

Why this approach wins

  • Performance: Static HTML loads in milliseconds. CDN caching makes it global.
  • Hosting simplicity: Static sites have no server load. Deploy anywhere cheaply or free.
  • Editorial experience: Editors stay in Ghost's familiar publishing UI. No Markdown files or GitHub workflows.
  • Developer freedom: Build with modern frameworks. Use any hosting. Avoid vendor lock-in.

Your Ghost static site questions answered

A Ghost static site uses Ghost as a headless CMS—a backend that stores content, but you build and host the frontend separately. You query Ghost's Content API at build time, generate pre-rendered HTML, and deploy that to any static host. Regular Ghost hosting uses Ghost's built-in frontend, theme layer, and hosting. Static sites give you more control, faster load times, and freedom to use Next.js, Gatsby, or Eleventy. Headless mode trades memberships and subscriptions for performance and flexibility.
