Self-hosting Documenso sounds free. The bills tell a different story.

Local setup takes 5 minutes. Production setup takes 8 hours. Operating it costs $479-825 per month. We'll show you why, and why managed Opsily DocuSeal is the answer.

What is Documenso?

Documenso and DocuSeal are both open-source e-signature platforms built to replace DocuSign. Documenso (15.4K GitHub stars) emphasizes clean developer experience and modern codebase. DocuSeal (18.7K GitHub stars) prioritizes feature completeness and ease of deployment. Both are AGPL-3.0 licensed, legally binding in the EU and US, and deployable on your own servers.

They sound attractive until you price out the infrastructure. A production instance needs PostgreSQL, Redis, SMTP, SSL certificates, file storage, and DevOps oversight. That is not free. It is not even cheap.

Self-hosting roadmap

What Self-Hosting Actually Requires

This is what gets glossed over in the tutorials.

deploy
Step 1 · 5 minutes

Deploy locally with Docker Compose

Clone the repo, run `docker compose up`, and you are signing documents on localhost:3000. Easy. This is what the blog posts show.

server
Step 2 · 4 hours

Move to production: SSL, SMTP, certificates

X.509 signing certificate (self-signed triggers Adobe warnings). External SMTP server (dev Inbucket will not cut it). Disable signup so randos do not create accounts. Configure TLS. Test the signing workflow end-to-end.

apps
Step 3 · Ongoing

Maintain: backups, updates, monitoring

PostgreSQL patches. Redis version bumps. Docker image updates. Certificate renewal every 90 days. Monitor disk space (PDF storage fills up). Alert on signing failures. One missed backup costs you.

rocket
Step 4 · Someday

Scale: when 10 signings a day becomes 100

PDF rendering is CPU-heavy. A single server handles 10-20 concurrent signatures before CPU maxes out. You add a load balancer, a separate database server, and object storage (AWS S3). Now you are running 4+ VMs.

$479-825

True monthly cost of self-hosting e-signature

Compute (VPS), database, storage, email service, and realistic DevOps time (4-6 hours per month). Not including your engineering salary.

Why self-hosting usually fails

The hidden costs:

SMTP reputation. Your server sends 500 signing reminder emails. If you misconfigure SPF/DKIM, they land in spam. Signers never see the link. Documents sit unsigned. You debug email deliverability at midnight.

SSL renewal. Let us Encrypt certificates expire every 90 days. Automation breaks. You forget one cycle. Signing breaks. Your users cannot sign. Panic.

Database backups. One bad disk failure and all signed documents vanish. Automated backups sound easy until they fail silently. You do not know until a user asks for a document from 3 months ago.

Scaling complexity. PDF rendering locks up when you hit 15 concurrent signatures. You add a second server. Now database replication. Then a load balancer. Within 6 months you are running infrastructure that costs 300-500 per month and requires DevOps expertise you do not have.

This is the self-hosted story: it starts cheap and free. It ends expensive and stressful.

Questions about self-hosted vs managed?

Self-hosted: you control the server, database, backups, updates, and all infrastructure. You pay for the hardware and your engineering time. Managed: Opsily controls the infrastructure. You pay a flat monthly fee. We handle updates, backups, scaling, SSL renewal, and monitoring. Self-hosted gives you maximum control but maximum responsibility. Managed gives you simplicity and predictable costs.
