The real choice

Directus: Any Database, Managed Collaboration

Directus is a backend that connects to your existing SQL database: Oracle, MS SQL, PostgreSQL, MySQL, you name it. It instantly generates REST and GraphQL APIs plus a collaborative admin interface.

If your organization already owns a database (especially Oracle, MS SQL, or a complex multi-database architecture), Directus is often the only headless option that fits without a rewrite. The Team plan ($499–600/mo depending on billing) includes 10 SSO seats and supports 50 collections out of the box. Collections can be expanded for $100 per 25-pack.

Directus Cloud handles the operations: managed backups, automatic scaling, built-in SSO, and premium support. For teams that want to avoid DevOps overhead, this is the draw.

Payload CMS: Next.js-Native, Fully Free

Payload is a code-first CMS that lives inside a Next.js project. Instead of a separate backend, Payload installs into your /app folder, and you define your content model in TypeScript.

The catch: your database must be PostgreSQL or MongoDB. No Oracle. No MySQL 5.7. If you are already running Next.js and own your database, Payload is incredibly lean. If you are not, the tech stack gets more rigid.

Payload is MIT licensed forever—no paid tiers, no managed version. Deployment is free on Vercel or Cloudflare; you only pay for your database and domain.

When Each Makes Sense

Choose Directus if:

Your org has an existing Oracle, MS SQL, or exotic database. You want a managed backend without DevOps. Your team is mixed (technical and non-technical). You need real-time collaboration features. You want built-in AI features (AI Assistant, MCP server).

Choose Payload if:

You own a Next.js codebase and want the CMS to live in Git. Your entire team is JavaScript/TypeScript developers. You want zero licensing costs and maximum independence. Your database is PostgreSQL or MongoDB. You are comfortable managing your own infrastructure.

The Hosting Question

Directus Cloud ($499+/mo) is the only fully managed option between the two. Payload has no managed offering from Payload Inc.—deployment is on you, whether Vercel, Cloudflare, or self-hosted.

If you want managed Directus without Directus Cloud's per-project pricing, Opsily provides dedicated hosting, backups, and support at a fixed monthly rate. Same for self-hosted Payload if you prefer not to manage the servers yourself.

Getting started

Setup Complexity

Directus setup is straightforward: point it at your existing database, and the admin UI is ready. The learning curve is low for non-technical users because the schema is visual. Teams familiar with SaaS tools (Airtable, Notion) pick it up fast.

Payload setup requires Node.js, npm, and TypeScript comfort. You define your schema in code, push it to Git, and deploy. For developers, this is natural. For marketing or ops teams, it is a barrier.

Migration Path

Migrating from Payload to Directus is not automatic. Payload's schema lives in TypeScript; Directus's is database-native. You must:

  1. Map your Payload schema to a SQL database (or normalize to Postgres).
  2. Transfer your content data.
  3. Update client apps to use Directus APIs instead of Payload's.

The effort scales with schema complexity. A simple blog might take a few days. A complex multi-tenant system could take weeks. Opsily can help coordinate the database migration and hosting setup during your transition.

Migrating from Directus to Payload is easier in some respects (both support Postgres) but requires a code-first rethink of your schema.

Cost Reality

Directus Core is free for teams under $5M revenue and 50 employees. Directus Cloud Team is $499/mo (annual) or $599/mo (monthly), plus $50/seat for users beyond 10.

Payload costs you only what your infrastructure costs. Vercel free tier covers many use cases. Self-hosting costs $10–100/mo depending on traffic.

For organizations running multiple backends, Directus Cloud costs multiply per app. Opsily's fixed-rate model offers predictability: pay for the server, not the number of apps running on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions that matter when choosing between Directus and Payload CMS.

Not automatically. Payload's schema lives in TypeScript; Directus's is database-native. Migration requires mapping your Payload schema to a SQL database, transferring your data, and rebuilding your client apps to consume Directus APIs instead. The effort depends on your schema complexity, but expect a few days to a few weeks. Opsily can help coordinate the database setup and hosting during your transition.
